50th Anniversary Wine Dinner
at 3rd Corner Encinitas

50 years after the original Judgement of Paris tasting, PCASDR, and your hosts Anastasia Berta and Tom Brown, will conduct our own Judgement of Paris Wine Dinner at 3rd Corner Encinitas. Launched two years after the original Ocean Beach location, these lauded neighborhood gems have earned rave reviews from Wine Spectator, James Suckling, Fodor’s, and San Diego Magazine’s own Barbarella Fokos. General Manager and Certified Sommelier Kaitlyn Ludwig has created an exquisite menu for us, each course featuring French-California pairings to tantalize your taste buds with wines chosen by Kaitlyn and PCASDR’s Anastasia Berta, Certified Sommelier. Please join us and judge for yourself- who does it better, France or California? This is our very first North County wine dinner, and we hope to see many of our North County members!

Background:
“Judgement of Paris” was a renowned wine tasting held in Paris, France, by British retailer/exporter Steven Spurrier and American Patricia Gallagher, who ran his L’Academie du Vin wine school. Gallagher visited Napa in 1975 and was greatly impressed by the wines she tasted. They organized a blind tasting in May of 1976 to celebrate the United States Bicentennial, comparing illustrious French wines with American counterparts made with the same varietals.
The tasting consisted of two flights of ten wines each: four French Red Bordeaux against six California Cabernets, and four French White Burgundies against six California Chardonnays. Eleven judges, the two organizers, plus nine highly respected French wine luminaries, tasted the two flights blind, grading each wine on a 20-point scale.
The results rocked the world when two American wines unexpectedly won the tasting: Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars edged out celebrated French Bordeaux, including Chateau Haut-Brion and Chateau Mouton Rothschild, to win the red flight, and Chateau Montelena Chardonnay soundly won the white flight, beating out Grand Cru and Premier Cru White Burgundies from Domaines Leflaive, Roulot, Drouhin, and Ramonet-Prudhomme.
After the initial fallout from what many French wine experts considered a scandalous outcome, curiosity about California wines blossomed, eventually propelling Napa, Sonoma, and other great California AVAs to their current pinnacle.
